SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of Portland rowing team is gearing up for their second race of the season in San Diego. They'll race in the San Diego Crew Classic in Mission Bay this weekend from March 26-27.
"Our squad is really excited for this trip and the opportunity to compete against not only some of the top crews in our conference, but some of the best teams from across the country," Portland head coach Gulliver Scott said.
The Pilots started their season with a strong showing at the Sacramento Invite at Lake Natoma two weekends ago. The Pilots took second in both of the Varsity Eight races, beating a pair of WCC teams in the process in Saint Mary's and Santa Clara.
This is always a fun, challenging regatta. It's early in the season and we have a real mix of youth and experience on the team, so these races are an important time for our athletes to show that they are progressing," Scott said. "It's a great opportunity for them to put together all the things they've been working on in practice."
Racing begins for the Pilots on Saturday, March 26 with the first varsity eight boat at 11:11 a.m. The varsity four boat will race after them at 11:43 a.m. and the second varsity eight will race just before noon at 11:59 a.m. Livestreaming will be available via YouTube.
