FRESNO, Calif. – The Portland Pilots (8-1) came out on top in their series opener against the Fresno State Bulldogs (4-5), winning 7-4 off the back of a stellar eighth inning. It's the second game in a row they've earned a win after trailing in the final two innings.
Eli Morse was solid in the start, pitching for six innings with seven strikeouts and only two runs allowed. Four different pitchers made an appearance, with Liam Hatakenaka officially recording the win – his first – and Peter Allegro getting his third save.
Portland had seven runs off 15 hits in this one. Jake Holcroft and Evan Scavotto were the top hitters with three each. Holcroft went 3-for-5 with the go-ahead run in the eighth. He had two RBI's. Scavotto batted 1.000 at 3-for-3. Tony Boetto and Trace Tammaro were the only other Pilots with multiple hits on the day, with Boetto batting 2-for-5 with two RBI's and Tammaro going 2-for-4.
The Pilots were making solid contact to start this one. The first score came in the second inning, with Ben Patacsil driving in a run off the sacrifice fly. The offense slowed down for both teams after the second as the next three innings flew by.
The scoring picked back up again in the bottom of the fifth, this time in favor of the Bulldogs. They took the lead with two runs off of RBI hits. Bobby Blandford brought in the first run with a single through the right side, then Ben Newton followed it up with an RBI single of his own. Fresno State had their first lead of the game.
The Pilots tied things back up in the top of the seventh. Boetto snuck a hit through to left field that brought home one runner for Portland. But the Bulldogs were able to respond in the bottom half of the inning, with Vinny Bologna lining a hit to the left side himself that got the lead back for Fresno State. They added one more off an RBI single from Payton Allen to make it 4-2 Bulldogs.
Just when things looked most bleak, the Pilots bounced back with a huge eighth inning. The Pilots scored five runs in this one to make it 7-4 Portland. Spencer Scott got it started with an RBI single. Then Holcroft gave Portland the go-ahead run with a two-run double immediately after. Boetto and Briley Knight each brought one run in themselves to make it 7-4 Pilots.
After that, it was up to Allegro and company to hold them off. They outed the next three batters to earn the win in the opener.
