FRESNO, Calif. – The Portland Pilots (8-2) dropped Game 2 of their series against the Fresno State Bulldogs (5-5) 1-0. It's the first time the Pilots have been shutout this season.
Brett Gillis took his first loss after allowing the winning run in the third inning. Despite the loss, Gillis pitched well, with nine strikeouts. Nick Nygard also did well in relief with three strikeouts and no runs allowed in two innings pitched.
The Pilots' struggles were almost entirely on the offensive end. Portland accumulated only three hits on the day, a season low. Gabe Skoro had two of the hits, officially going 2-for-4, while Evan Scavotto had the other hit.
The Bulldogs' rotation pitched particularly well against the Pilots. Ixan Henderson, Kyle Pruhsmeier and Nikoh Mitchell all had solid outings, with Henderson earning the win officially. He pitched six innings with nine strikeouts, no runs allowed and only three hits. Mitchell -- who earned the save -- also pitched two hitless innings with four K's.
It was a solid defensive start in the first two innings for both teams until the Bulldogs broke the scoring seal with a run in the third. Fresno State had three hits in the inning, including an RBI single right up the middle courtesy of Zach Morgan. The Bulldogs led 1-0 after three.
After the run, the scoring once again grinded to a halt. Both starters continued to dominate, with Henderson not allowing a hit until the fifth inning and Gillis giving up only the one run.
The Pilots struggled to get runners on base, with their best chance coming with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth. But Henderson struck out Muench to keep the lead for Fresno State.
After that, the bullpen for the Bulldogs continued to give Portland fits at the plate. The trio of Henderson, Pruhsmeier and Mitchell proved too much as Fresno State took the second game against the Pilots.
The series finale will take place tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and video options.
