LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Portland Pilots (17-10, 4-5 WCC) allowed eight runs in the eighth inning to give the Loyola Marymount Lions (9-17-1, 6-4 WCC) an 11-5 victory in Los Angeles. The loss gives LMU the series.
Merrick Baldo took the win for the Lions while Peter Allegro recorded the loss. Allegro gave up the first three runs in the eighth inning that put the Lions in the lead. The Pilots cycled through four different pitchers in the eighth inning. Eli Morse did, however, match his career high in the start with 11 strikeouts through 5.2 innings.
Portland was solid at the plate, with five runs off of 13 hits. Sam Brown was the top batter for the Pilots, going 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and four RBI's. His home run was his fifth of the season and his second of the series. Trace Tammaro also finished 3-for-5 while Ben Patacsil and Gabe Skoro each went 2-for-5, with Patacsil earning a double and Skoro hitting two doubles.
Both teams got the scoring started in the second inning. Brown got things going for the Pilots with an RBI single that shot up center field to bring in one run. The Lions, however, responded with fervor, scoring three runs off three separate RBI singles. Once again, LMU had an early lead over the Pilots.
That lead would hold for two full innings, but the Pilots slowly chipped away. It started once again with Brown, who hit an RBI double that made it only 3-2 Lions. Then Patacsil made it home off the error at first base in the top of the fifth, tying things up at three.
The go-ahead runs came in the sixth inning for the Pilots. With a runner on first, Brown once again stepped to the plate. He took two pitches before hitting a moonshot over the wall in right field. That brought both himself and Nich Klemp home, giving Portland a 5-3 lead.
The Pilots got to enjoy the lead for a little while until the Lions came roaring back. LMU scored eight runs in the eighth inning, dramatically changing the trajectory of the game. It put Portland in a hole that was too much to overcome, with the Lions taking the game and the series from Portland 11-5.
