TEMPE, Ariz. – Portland women's tennis player Iva Zelic became just the fourth player in program history to be nationally-ranked as she came in this week at No. 108 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Singles Rankings.
Zelic has posted a 20-5 overall record this season, including a 13-1 record this Spring in dual matches at the top of Portland's lineup. The Zagreb, Croatia native is also 4-2 against nationally ranked opponents.
"Iva is having one of the best seasons in Pilot tennis history and it is great to see her get into national spotlight," said Portland head coach Filip Zivkovic. "Our schedule this year was very competitive and we have faced multiple ranked opponents so for Iva to be at 13-1 winning the last 12 singles matches speaks volumes of her physical ability and mental toughness."
Zelic enters this weekend's matches riding a 12-match win streak and she will face two more ranked opponents in Loyola Marymount's Veronica Miroshnichenko (No. 88) and Pepperdine's Shiori Fukuda (No. 11).
"I am extremely proud Iva and even more proud of her growth over the last two years, both on and off the court," Zivkovic said. "She is a great player, excellent student and an incredible leader for our team. It is her hard work that put her in this position, and I am sure that we will see many more great things from her moving forward."
The Pilots will host LMU and Pepperdine in the final two home matches of the season. Portland welcomes the No. 23 Lions on Friday at 10 a.m. and then welcome the No. 5 Waves on Saturday at 10 a.m. Both matches will have live video and scoring available at
