PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots women's soccer team has announced their schedule for the fall of 2022, which features matchups against four Pac-12 opponents and other high-level Division I opponents. The Pilots will also play 12 games at home this year.
"After spending much of the Fall '21 season on the road during our pre-conference schedule, this year we're definitely welcoming the opportunity to play in front of the Pilot faithful with eight home matches before we head into WCC play," Portland head coach Michelle French said. "Scheduling four Pac-12 games shows our commitment to consistently match up against top Power 5 programs. The teams that round out our pre-conference schedule have historically been successful within their respective conferences."
The Pilots will play the University of British Columbia on Friday, Aug. 12 in an exhibition at home before officially opening the year against the Utah Utes here at Merlo Field on Thursday, Aug. 18. The Pilots opened their season last year against the Utes, dropping that contest 3-1. The Pilots will stay home for a showdown against Eastern Washington on Sunday, Aug. 21 before taking on the Washington State Cougars in Pullman, Wash. on Aug. 25.
Portland returns home for a showdown against Montana Grizzlies on Aug. 28 before hitting the road to Lincoln, Neb. for a match against the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The Pilots will enjoy a long homestand after that, with six games at Merlo. They'll host Hawaii on Sept. 4, Seattle U on Sept. 8, Washington on Sept. 11, Oregon on Sept. 16, Utah Valley on Sept. 24 and Loyola Marymount on Oct. 1. The LMU showdown will be the conference opener for the Pilots and also the first game after a two-week hiatus.
The Pilots will spend most of October alternating between home and road matches, all of them WCC contests. On Oct. 5 they'll travel to San Diego for their match against the Toreros before returning home to face the Pepperdine Waves on Oct. 8. They'll take on the BYU Cougars in Provo following that on Oct. 15. The Cougars recently made it all the way to the NCAA College Cup Final in 2021, losing on penalty kicks to Florida State.
After that, the Pilots host Saint Mary's on Oct. 19 before taking on another tough conference opponent in the Santa Clara Broncos in Santa Clara on Oct. 22. The Broncos faced off against the Cougars in the College Cup Semifinals this past season and won the College Cup Final the season prior in the spring of 2021. After that, the Pilots will host the Pacific Tigers for their final home game of the 2022 season.
The Pilots finish off the year with a pair of road matches, taking on the San Francisco Dons in San Francisco on Nov. 2 and the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Nov. 5 in Spokane.
Portland's women's soccer team is coming off a 9-8 season where they finished fifth in the conference. Their 5-4 record in WCC play was their best since 2013.
