University of Portland will have ten representatives at next week's NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Championships hosted in Fayetteville, Ark. The meet will take place at John McDonnell Field at the University of Arkansas May 25-28.
The top 48 qualifying times for each event from the West and East earned spots in the respective fields. Top competitors from the West and East Preliminary meets will advance to the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships scheduled for June 8-11 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
"Getting ten athletes to the first round of the championships is a great accomplishment," Portland men's track coach Rob Conner said. "It speaks to the very hard work prioritized by our student-athletes as well as the encouragement given to them by our coaches and support staff."
Portland will be well-represented in the distance events with four men competing in the 1,500-meter run – Cathal Doyle, Matt Strangio, George Duggan and Chris Morzenti. Doyle will be looking to reach nationals for the second consecutive year in the event.
Jacob Klemz is the lone Pilot to qualify in multiple events as he is in both the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter start lists. Bradley Peloquin snuck into the 10,000-meter field and Riley Osen will look to reach the NCAA's for the second time in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase. Osen earned All-America honors in 2018 with an eighth-place finish.
On the women's side, Laura Pellicoro enters the 800-meter run with the ninth-best time in the field and Veerle Bakker is the 12th-fastest in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase group. Emma Jenkins punched her ticket in the 1,500-meter run.
