MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine Waves snapped Portland's 10-game West Coast Conference winning streak with a 6-1 victory Saturday afternoon at Eddy D. Field. The team can secure a first-round bye at next week's
WCC Tournament with a win on Sunday against the Waves to close the regular season.
Pepperdine got to the Pilots (31-20, 17-9 WCC) early with two runs in the first and another in the second inning. The Waves (23-26) would push ahead 6-0 after six innings and hold on to even the series.
Portland still controls its own destiny regarding earning the No. 2 seed and opening round bye in the six-team conference tournament hosted next week in Stockton, Calif. Portland and San Diego both are 17-9 entering Sunday's season finale. The Toreros host league-leading Gonzaga Saturday night for the final regular season game. The Pilots own the tiebreaker over the Toreros after winning two-of-three earlier this season. A Portland win or San Diego loss gives the Pilots the No. 2 seed.
Jake Holcroft collected his second multi-hit game in as many days after finished 2-for-3 with a walk and stolen base for the lone UP player with multiple hits.
Portland's lone run came in the seventh inning after Evan Scavotto tripled down the right field line and scored on a groundout by Tony Boetto.
Brock Gillis (4-4) took the loss on the mound after surrendering five runs (four earned) on eight hits in 4.0 innings of work. Hinkel (5-4) earned the win after tossing 8.0 innings and allowing just five hits with five strikeouts.
The series concludes Sunday at 1 p.m. with live scoring and video links available at
