STOCKTON, Calif. – The Portland Pilots (32-22) bounced back from their opening loss in the WCC Tournament, defeating the Loyola Marymount Lions (20-34-1) 10-2 to avoid elimination. The win is the first ever in the tournament in program history.
Eli Morse got the win after going 7.2 shutout innings with just two hits allowed and six strikeouts. With those six strikeouts, he became the all-time leader in program history for strikeouts in a career. Brock Gillis started for Portland, going 1.1 innings with two runs and four hits allowed.
The Pilots had a solid day at the plate, going for 10 runs with 13 hits. Evan Scavotto shined, going 2-for-5 with two home runs and five RBI's. He's just the second Pilot this year to have two home runs or more in a game. Christian Cooney was also 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI's, Gabe Skoro hit an RBI double, and four other Pilots – Sam Brown, Jake Holcroft, Spencer Scott and Ben Patacsil – recorded at least two hits.
The Lions scored first in this one, earning a run in the first inning. Benny Casillas snuck a liner right up the middle with a runner already on second, giving Devan Ornelas just enough time to get home and make it 1-0.
Both teams traded runs in the second inning. Skoro got things started for the Pilots with a big double to right center, bringing home Ben Patacsil. Unfortunately for Portland, the Lions responded right back with an RBI single from Dylan Dennis to make it 2-1 Lions.
The Pilots got their first lead of the game in the following inning. They scored two runs in the third, one coming off a double play that gave Holcroft time to make it home and another off a Brown RBI single.
After taking the lead in the third, the Pilots took control in the fourth. Portland put together a two-out rally that saw five runs scored. Scavotto got the scoring going with a three-run homer deep over the wall in center field. Cooney followed that right up with a solo shot of his own to put the Pilots up five. The Pilots got their final run of the inning after a flubbed ball at shortstop allowed Brown to get home and make it 8-2 Portland.
A momentous milestone was reached in the seventh inning. Morse struck out the 296
th batter of his career. That strikeout gave him the most strikeouts by any pitcher in program history. He officially finished the day with 297 career strikeouts.
Scavotto added his second homer of the day – a two-run shot over the left field wall – in the top of the ninth to put the score at its final. The Pilots survived for another game.
The Pilots will now play the non-advancing team in the matchup between San Diego and Gonzaga. Those two teams will play at 3:30. Portland will play the non-advancing team at 7:30 p.m. tonight. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and video.
