The Pilots will host the NCAA runner-up in the North Carolina Tar Heels on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 24 at the Moda Center to open the PKI. The two teams faced off back in 2017 as well for the inaugural tournament, the PK80 Invitational. The
PKI is one of two tournaments, the other being the Phil Knight Legacy, being played in Portland during Thanksgiving Weekend, with a combined eight men's teams and four women's teams competing during ESPN's annual Feast Week Thursday Nov. 24-27. The Chiles Center is serving as a host site along with the Rose Quarter's Moda Center and Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Portland, North Carolina, Villanova and Iowa State make up one side of the PKI bracket, while Michigan State, Oregon, Alabama and UConn complete the bracket.
Oregon and the Pilots will also meet later in the regular season with the Pilots traveling down to Eugene, Ore. to battle the Ducks on Dec. 17. The Ducks earned an invitation to the postseason NIT last year after going 20-15 overall, advancing to the Round of 32 before falling to Texas A&M. The Ducks have made the NCAA Tournament seven times in 12 years under head coach Dana Altman, including a NCAA Final Four appearance in 2017.
Pilot fans will have their first chance to see Portland in action on Nov. 7. The Pilots will host the Lewis & Clark Pioneers as part of a doubleheader with the women's team, with the men playing at 7:30 p.m. Later that week, the Pilots will partake in another doubleheader with the women on Nov. 9, welcoming Florida A&M for another 7:30 p.m. tip.
The Pilots finish the week off on Nov. 11 when they welcome their crosstown rivals, the Portland State Vikings, to the Chiles Center. Last year, the Pilots beat the Vikings for the third year in a row 69-54 at Viking Pavilion. With the women's team's victory over the Vikings last season, it was the first time both teams have beaten Portland State in the same year since 2015.
After the three-game homestand, Portland will hit the road to take on Kent State on Nov. 14 and Air Force on Nov. 17. The Pilots return home to face off against another Pacific Northwest rival in the Seattle U Redhawks on Nov. 19. The Redhawks finished an impressive 23-9 overall and 14-4 in WAC play, winning their first ever WAC regular season title and earning the top seed in the WAC Tournament.
Following the Seattle U showdown, Portland will partake in the PKI from Nov. 24-27 before beginning a four-game homestand. During that stretch, they'll play the Multnomah Lions on Nov. 30, the North Dakota Fighting Hawks on Dec. 3, the North Dakota State Bison on Nov. 5 and the New Orleans Privateers on Dec. 10. The Pilots beat the Privateers this past March in the first round of The Basketball Classic at the Chiles Center, marking the Pilots first ever postseason victory.
The Pilots finish off non-conference play with their matchup against the Ducks on Dec. 17 and a road game in California against UC Riverside. WCC play will begin the following week. While the official WCC schedule has not yet been finalized,
all matchups have been set for the conference slate.
The Pilots are coming off one of the most successful seasons in recent memory under first-year head coach Shantay Legans. The Pilots finished 19-15 and finished sixth in the WCC, recording their highest win total since 2010 and their fourth-highest win total since joining Division I in 1958. Their 7-7 record in WCC play was also their best since 2015. The Pilots return the top seven scorers and all major contributors to the roster for this season.
