Zelic, Pethybridge Record Wins at Milwaukee Tennis Classic

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. – University of Portland women's tennis players Iva Zelic and Sally Pethybridge teamed up for an opening round doubles victory at the prestigious Milwaukee Tennis Classic on Friday. Both players also picked up singles wins later in the day but were knocked out of the singles main draw.

The duo opened the tournament against the North Texas tandem of Matilde Morais and Jasmine Adams and won the final three games for a 6-3 victory. Zelic and Pethybridge advance to a Round of 16 match on Saturday morning against a team from defending NCAA runner-up Oklahoma in Emma Staker and Dana Guzman.

Zelic posted a 6-3, 6-2 opening round singles win over Navy's Emily Tannenbaum before dropping a three-setter to Liz Norman of Purdue. After Zelic took the first set in a tiebreaker, Norman won the second set and advanced to the quarterfinals via third set super tiebreaker.

Pethybridge dropped a hard-fought opening round match to Alex Staiculescu of Indiana in three sets. She lost the opening set before taking the second by a 6-3 margin. Pethybridge jumped out to an early lead in third set super tiebreaker, but Staiculescu won by a 10-7 margin. Pethybridge bounced back for an impressive 6-3, 6-2 consolation singles win against Emma Kojcic of Marquette.

The Milwaukee Tennis Classic continues Saturday with two rounds of doubles and then more singles action. The tournament finals are scheduled for Sunday. Game-by-game scoring of the main draws are available via Tennis Ticker.
