LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The Portland Pilots went into the half beating Rhode Island 34-30, but could not pull away in the second half and fell 64-58 to the Rams at Orleans Arena Saturday.
The Pilots (3-4) had three players score in double figures, led by Maisie Burnham, who had 13 points. Kennedy Dickie added 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists and Lucy Cochrane helped out with a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
How It Happened
After falling behind 5-0, Portland went on a 10-0 run with 8:38 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Dickie, to take a 10-5 lead. The Pilots then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 17-14 advantage. Portland relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 17 points.
Rhode Island rallied to take a 24-13 lead before Portland went on a 6-0 run starting at the 8:38 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Burnham, to narrow its deficit to 24-19. The Pilots kept the rally going and overtook the Rams for a 34-30 halftime advantage.
Portland then lost its advantage in the third quarter and trailed the Rams 47-44 entering the fourth. Portland could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 64-58.
Game Notes
» Lucy Cochrane notched a double-double for the Pilots with 11 points and 10 rebounds. It's the first double-double from a Pilot this season.
» This is the first time Cochrane has scored double digits in three straight games for the first time in his career.
» The Pilots held the Rams to only 34 percent shooting from the field. It's the lowest field-goal percentage the Pilots have held an opponent to this year.
» The Pilots put on a passing clinic, recording an assist on 74 percent of made field goals.
» The Portland defense forced 20 turnovers.
» Maisie Burnham led the Pilots with 13 points. It's the first time she's led the Pilots in scoring this season.
» Dickie's 12 points were a season high for the forward.
