PORTLAND, Ore. – Mike Meadows collected a career-high 39 points, but the Portland men's basketball team fell to the Santa Clara Broncos 103-84 at home Saturday.
Meadows' 39-point effort led the Pilots (13-16, 5-9 WCC). Tyler Robertson helped out with 16 points and Juanse Gorosito chipped in with eight points, six rebounds and two steals coming off the bench.
Santa Clara raced out to 20-point lead in the first half behind hot shooting and finished the night 16-for-35 from three-point range and 56 percent from the field overall.
How It Happened
Portland struggled out of the gate and the Broncos used a 16-4 run to pull ahead by a 25-11 margin on a putback from Brandon Podziemski. Santa Clara would take a 56-36 lead heading into halftime after drilling 10 first half threes.
Santa Clara kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 74-52 advantage before Portland went on an 11-0 run, finished off by back-to-back threes from Robertson and Meadows to shrink the deficit to 74-63 with 9:24 to go in the contest. Santa Clara responded and outscored the Pilots the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 103-84. Portland shot well from three-point range in the half, hitting seven shots from deep.
Game Notes
» Mike Meadows erupted for his second 30-point game of the season and finished 14-of-22 from the field. He was a point shy of becoming the fifth Pilot in program history to score 40 in a game.
» Meadows, Robertson, and Moses Wood combined to account for 76 percent of the Pilots points.
» Portland got a team-high eight rebounds from Moses Wood.
» The team recognized Joey St. Pierre, Jack Perry, Meadows and Kristian Sjolund pre-game as part of Senior Day.
