MOSCOW, Idaho – The Portland women's tennis team held off the Idaho Vandals by a 5-2 margin for the team's third consecutive win on Saturday at the Kibbie Dome. The Pilots improve to 4-2 overall, while the Vandals drop to 1-3.
The marathon match began with the Pilots sweeping the doubles point. Iva Zelic and Sally Pethybridge took No. 1 doubles with a 6-4 result to improve to 4-1 this Spring. Rimona Rouf and Aleksandra Dimitrijevic won 6-4 at No. 2 and improved to 5-1 in dual doubles action this season. Freshmen Meagan Pearson and Alaia Rubio Perez teamed up for their first win, 6-2 at No. 3
Idaho evened the score with a win at No. 2 singles followed by Zelic pulling out a 6-0, 4-6, 6-4 win at the top of the lineup. The Vandals again tied the score as Rachelle Starreveld beat Rouf in a three-setter at No. 3.
The bottom of Portland's lineup stepped up again, like they have all Spring. Dimitrijevic defeated Selin Sepken in a match that lasted nearly three hours by a score of 6-7, 7-6, 6-2.
Pilot freshman Meagan Pearson then clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-4 win against Saffron Dowse at the No. 5 position. Freshman Alaia Rubio Perez concluded the scoring with a straight sets win at No. 6. Rubio Perez is now 5-1 in dual singles play.
The Pilots will conclude the weekend road trip with a match at Eastern Washington tomorrow at 10 a.m.
