PORTLAND, Ore -- Jake Holcroft hit an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth to give the Portland Pilots a 5-4 win over the Pepperdine Waves.
Kaden Segel (2-0) got the win out of the bullpen for Portland (11-6, 1-0). The right-hander went 1.2 shutout innings without giving up a hit, no walks and striking out two. Joey Gartrell started the ballgame and went 6.1 innings, surrendering four runs, three earned, on eight hits, walking one and striking out six.
Holcroft led the way offensively for the Pilots, going 3-for-4 in the ballgame with a double, a walk and two RBI's. Jake Tsukada also chipped in, going 2-for-5 for Portland with a triple.
How it Happened
Pepperdine scored two early runs in the first but didn't keep that lead for long. Portland scored twice in the second inning, with one run coming across on Holcroft's single and the other off a sacrifice fly from Spencer Scott.
The score stayed at 2-2 until the very next inning, when the Pilots put runs on the scoreboard once again. Tsukada came across to score the lone run of the inning for Portland, which brought the Pilots lead to 3-2.
Portland lost its lead when Pepperdine scored twice in the seventh inning off an error and a sacrifice fly. The Pilots responded in the bottom of the inning with a sacrifice fly of their own to even it up at four.
Segel kept the Waves in check and the Pilots scored a run on Holcroft's RBI double, bringing the Portland advantage to 5-4. The score held held for the rest of the game.
