PORTLAND, Ore. -- Nich Klemp and Jake Holcroft each racked up four hits to help lead the Portland Pilots over the Pepperdine Waves 8-6 on Saturday. The win clinched
Brock Gillis (2-0) got the win for Portland (12-6, 2-0). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on two hits, allowing four walks and striking out seven.
In addition to his four hits, Holcroft had an inside-the-park home run and an RBI to lead the Pilots. Klemp added two doubles and an RBI to his four-hit performance as well. Tristan Gomes also contributed for Portland, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a double, a home run and four RBI's.
How it Happened
The Pilots put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the fourth inning. Portland's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a three-run home run off the bat of Gomes.
The Pilots then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the sixth inning after the Waves cut it to 4-1. Portland picked up two runs in the frame, the big hit being an RBI double from Gomes, which brought the Pilots lead to 6-1.
Pepperdine narrowed Portland's lead to 6-2 before the Pilots stretched the advantage to 7-2 in the seventh inning. The Pilots recorded a run on Holcroft's leadoff home run off Brandon Llewellyn.
Portland held the Waves scoreless before their offense got things rolling the next inning. Henry Muench crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Pilots, bringing the Portland advantage to 8-2. Pepperdine put four runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Pilots still held on for the 8-6 win.
