MORAGA, Calif. -- The Portland Pilots got a boost from Jake Holcroft, who totaled three hits, but still fell 6-4 to the Saint Mary's Gaels on Friday. Kaden Segel (2-1) took the loss on the mound for Portland (16-9, 6-1).
In addition to his three hits, Holcroft had a double, a home run, a walk and two RBI's to lead the Pilots. Jake Tsukada furnished a standout effort as well, going 2-for-5 with an RBI.
How it Happened
The Pilots got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Holcroft put Portland on the board with a leadoff home run off Ryan Taurek. The home run was his fifth of the year.
The Gaels then tied the ballgame at one before the Pilots came back to reclaim their advantage in the third inning. Portland pushed across a run on Holcroft's one-out RBI double, which brought the score to 2-1 in favor of the Pilots.
Portland's lead had evaporated in the third inning and turned into a 3-2 Saint Mary's advantage. But the Pilots retook the lead in the fifth off Tsukada's run-scoring single and a sacrifice fly, making it 4-3 Portland. ButThe Pilots were unable to hold the lead, as Saint Mary's scored three times over the remaining four innings, including a two-run homer from Chris Almanza in the seventh, to grab the 6-4 win.
