PORTLAND, Ore. -- Four Portland players recorded multiple hits, but the Portland Pilots fell to the Gonzaga Bulldogs 10-4 Friday.
Joey Gartrell (4-3) got the ball to start for Portland (20-17, 9-7) and took the loss. The right-hander went six innings, giving up seven runs, three earned, on seven hits, allowing two walks and striking out five. Zach Johnson was a bright spot for the Pilots, coming out of the bullpen and throwing 1.2 shutout innings, allowing no hits, with no walks and two strikeouts.
Jake Holcroft led the hit barrage for the Pilots, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame. Briley Knight put together a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI's. Jake Tsukada and Zach Toglia also each went 2-for-4.
How it Happened
The Pilots got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Portland scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of senior Nich Klemp and an RBI double from Knight.
The Bulldogs then rallied to score seven runs, one in the third and six in the fifth, and take a 7-3 lead before the Pilots got back on the board in the sixth. Portland pushed across a run on Knight's one-out RBI double, which tightened the Bulldogs lead to 7-4.
The Pilots were unable to get any closer, as Gonzaga added three runs to their tally in the eighth off a three-run homer from Ezra Samperi on the way to a 10-4 final.
