SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Portland Pilots have secured the No. 5 seed at this week's
West Coast Conference Tennis Championships and will face the No. 4 seed BYU Cougars in the tournament's opening round on Thursday. The match will begin at 10 a.m. at the Aztec Tennis Complex and will have live video and scoring available.
The top six teams from the WCC in the ITA National Rankings are invited to participate in the conference tournament with the top two seeds earning an opening round bye. The Pilots (10-8, 2-5 WCC) moved into the top five courtesy of a strong showing against Gonzaga in the regular season finale on Saturday. The Portland-BYU winner will face top-seeded Pepperdine in Friday's semifinals at 10 a.m., while the tournament championship match is slated for Saturday at 10 a.m.
Portland head coach Filip Zivkovic, in his second year at the helm, has led Portland to its most wins since the 2015 team finished 17-6. The Pilots also
cracked the ITA National Rankings earlier this year for just the third time.
Portland lost the previous meeting against the Cougars (12-8, 6-3) this year by a 7-0 margin on March 25 in a tough road environment at altitude.
The Pilots have been dominant in doubles matches during the spring season with a combined 32-11 record. The No. 1 tandem of Iva Zelic and Sally Pethybridge have gone 12-2 and are ranked No. 84 nationally, while Portland's No. 2 team of Rimona Rouf and Aleksandra Dimitrijevic have posted an 11-3 record.
Zelic has also been stellar at the top of the singles lineup with a 12-6 dual record and 4-2 mark against WCC opponents. Freshman Alaia Rubio Perez has also been a consistent winner with a 13-4 dual record. Portland does not have a senior on its roster this year in terms of eligibility.
