PORTLAND, Ore. -- Portland starter Joey Gartrell and reliever Kaden Segel put together great efforts on the bump on Friday, but the Portland Pilots still fell 2-1 to the LMU Lions. The Lions take first place in the WCC with the win.
The quality outing from Gartrell (3-2) was not enough for Portland (17-12, 7-3). The right-hander went 7.1 innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on six hits, allowing no walks and striking out three. Kaden Segel was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going 1.2 shutout innings without allowing a hit, walking none and striking out three.
At the plate, the Pilots were led by Briley Knight, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a double and an RBI. Nich Klemp compiled a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 1-for-4 with a double.
How it Happened
LMU started the scoring with a two-run home run courtesy of Diego Bacquiero. The Pilots were still trailing 2-0 in the sixth inning when they first put runs on the board. Portland got an RBI single from Knight, scoring Klemp from second base. The Pilots were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
