PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots Women's Soccer Team has announced their schedule for the 2023 fall season. The schedule features matchups against three Pac-12 schools, several nationally ranked opponents, and an impressive conference schedule. The 18-game regular season schedule features eightmatches at Merlo Field, with the other 10 matches being played on the road.
"Maite has done an incredible job putting together a non-conference schedule that gives the team the opportunity to play against a diverse group of high-quality programs from several competitive conferences across the country," Portland Head Coach Michelle French said. "Similarly, the WCC has proven to be one of the top conferences in the country, with every game presenting new opportunities for growth. The team is focused and exceptionally motivated as they're looking to build off the positive momentum generated after having a successful Fall '22 season."
The Pilots play one home exhibition match against the University of British Columbia on Wednesday, Aug. 9. Portland officially opens the regular season on the road against Cal State Northridge on Thursday, Aug. 17. Up next for the Pilots is a matchup against the defending 2022 NCAA National Champions, the UCLA Bruins, in Los Angeles on Sunday, Aug. 20.
The Pilots play their first home game on Thursday, Aug. 24 against Washington State University. The Cougars and Pilots played each other to a 0-0 draw last season. Washington State has made the NCAA Tournament five of the last eight seasons. The following Thursday, Aug. 31, the Pilots host UC Davis who finished last season 9-6-4 overall.
The following two games, the Pilots are on the road in the Pacific Northwest, playing at Oregon State University on Sunday, Sept. 3 and at Seattle University on Thursday, Sept. 7.
On Sunday, Sept. 10, the Pilots welcome UC Irvine, a team that advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament last season. The Anteaters lost to No. 1 seed Alabama, who also defeated Portland in the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season.
The Pilots then head east to Providence, to take on Brown University on Thursday, Sept. 14. Brown also made the NCAA tournament last season, falling to UC Irvine in the second round. Portland completes the east coast trip by playing Stonehill College on Sunday, Sept. 17.
Saturday, Sept. 23 the Pilots will complete their non-conference slate against the Cal Poly Mustangs at Merlo Field. The Pilots then open conference play against University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif. on Saturday, Sept. 30. The Tigers went 7-3-10 last season, unbeaten through their first 11 matches.
For their first home WCC match, Portland plays host to Gonzaga University on Wednesday, Oct. 4. The Bulldogs went 10-3-5 last season. The Pilots will head back on the road to play at LMU on Saturday, Oct. 7.
Portland continues conference play at home against University of San Diego on Saturday, Oct. 14 before hitting the road on Sunday, Oct. 22 to take on Pepperdine University who went 9-4-5 last season. The Pilots will host the University of San Francisco the following weekend on Saturday, Oct. 28. On Wednesday, Nov. 1 the Pilots play their final conference road game at Saint Mary's. To finish off the regular season, Portland will host the 2021 NCAA National Champions, Santa Clara Broncos, on Saturday, Nov. 4 at Merlo Field.
The Pilots are coming off their best season since 2013, finishing 12-5-4 and making it back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in nine years. They beat Arizona State 3-0 in the first round of the tournament, which was their biggest tournament win since 2010.
