TEMPE, Ariz. – The University of Portland women's tennis team was named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team on Monday, while eight players garnered ITA Scholar Athlete recognition: Annika Alcon, Aleksandra Dimitrijevic, Meagan Pearson, Sally Pethybridge, Rimona Rouf, Alaia Rubio Perez, Rose Watanabe and Iva Zelic.
To qualify for the team award, a program must post a GPA of 3.2 or higher for the academic year. As a team, Portland's active roster posted a 3.68 cumulative GPA during the 2022-23 academic year. Individual scholar athlete awards are given to those with a GPA of 3.5 or higher for the year. Portland was one of 234 Division I teams to be selected, while 1,513 individuals were recognized nationally.
Four of the eight Portland scholar athletes chosen also garnered WCC All-Academic recognition earlier this year. Pethybridge and Dimitrijevic were named to the WCC All-Academic First Team, while Rouf and Zelic earned honorable mention recognition.
Portland (10-9) concluded its best season since the 2015 Pilots went 17-6 and reached the WCC finals. The Pilots cracked the ITA National Rankings earlier this year for just the third time and knocked off a nationally ranked opponent in Northern Arizona. The doubles tandem of Zelic and Pethybridge also became the first UP women's tennis doubles team to be nationally ranked and finished at No. 69 in the yearend rankings. The team is expected to return its entire roster for the 2023-24 season.
