PORTLAND, Ore. -- The start of the 2023 campaign for Portland Pilots men's soccer is coming soon, with the squad playing an exhibition this Friday, Aug. 11 against the Seattle U Redhawks here at Merlo Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., with University of Portland staff members getting free admission.
The Pilots are coming off a historic 2022 fall season that saw them make the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament and finish with their best overall record since the 1995 season. Portland finished 15-3-3 overall for a .786 winning percentage, their best in 27 years. They're ranked 13th nationally in the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll and also bring in the No. 2 ranked recruiting class per TopDrawerSoccer.
The Seattle U Redhawks went 7-10-1 overall and 5-4 in conference play. They finished third in the WAC, winning their first round matchup in the conference tournament against Grand Canyon before falling to San Jose State in the semifinals. The Pilots have won the last two matchups between the teams, including a 3-2 first-round victory in the 2021 NCAA Tournament.
This is the first of three exhibition games for the Pilots before opening the regular season. The Pilots will travel to Seattle to take on the preseason No. 6 Washington Huskies on Aug. 14 before hosting the Southern Oregon Raiders on Aug. 18. They open the regular season here in Portland against the Sacramento State Hornets on Aug. 25. Kickoff for the regular season opener is set for 7 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for more information.
