SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The Portland volleyball team displayed remarkable determination in a 3-2 victory against the Santa Clara Broncos Thursday on the road at Leavey Center. The victory improved the Pilots' record to 6-7 overall and 1-0 in WCC action.
The Pilots offense was paced by Lia Hawken, who finished with 16 kills on the day while accumulating a hitting percentage of .333. Lucia Busso added 13 and Maui Robins chipped in with 12 as part of balanced Portland attack. Hawken also pitched in with six in the contest. Portland got 10 digs from Maddie Corpe to lead them defensively.

SET 1 | The Pilots took the first set 25-21 propelled by a solid showing on the attacking side. Portland registered a .341 attack percentage with 18 kills in the set victory. After the lead changed hands three times, the Pilots took control for good at 17-16 and rode that advantage to victory.
SET 2 | Portland then lost set two 25-16, tying the match at a set apiece. Portland trailed by as many as nine points as Santa Clara grabbed the advantage for good at 2-1 in a set that was tied up just once before the Broncos took over the lead.
SET 3 | Portland then lost their second set in a row, falling behind in the match two sets to one. Despite pinpoint serving, the Pilots fell in the set by the score of 25-15. Portland notched five aces in the loss.
SET 4 | Portland broke their two set losing streak and forced a fifth set with a 25-23 victory in set number four. A strong performance on the attacking side led the Pilots to victory in the set. Portland registered a .382 attack percentage with 17 kills in the set win. The Pilots rallied from down six at 9-3 to grab the win.
SET 5 | Portland rallied from down two sets to one to win the next two sets, culminating in a 15-13 fifth-set victory, and earn the 3-2 win. The Pilots took set five thanks to a strong showing on the attacking side. Portland put together a .368 attack percentage with 10 kills in the set win. After the lead changed hands two times, the Pilots took control for good at 13-12 and rode that advantage to victory.
