SAN MATEO, Calif. --Â The West Coast Conference announced this morning that Portland Redshirt Junior Laura Pellicoro was named the WCC's Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week following her performance at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn.
Pellicoro finished seventh overall at the Roy Griak Invitational with a time of 21:12.5, leading the Pilots to a fourth-place finish overall at the meet. Roy Griak's course is notoriously difficult, lending well to runners who run patient early on and close hard in the latter stages of the race. As Pellicoro often does, she put herself near the front of the race and passed athletes within the last two kilometers to earn herself seventh overall.Â
Pellicoro's preparations for the cross country season were postponed due to the World University Games in August, where she won the women's 800 and 1500 meter events. Despite this, her competitive nature allowed her to excel in the longer 6,000 meter distance. Pellicoro earned All-American status during the 2022 Cross Country season after finishing 15th overall at the NCAA Championships. She will look to repeat this feat later this season at the NCAA Championships on Nov. 18, 2023.
The Pilots race again on Sept. 30 at the 48th Charles Bowles Willamette Invitational in Salem, Ore. For more information about Portland Pilots cross country visit PortlandPilots.com.
