PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Pilots Baseball Announced on Tuesday their schedule for the 2024 spring season. The schedule features one of the strongest home schedules in recent program history, with four opponents who finished in the top 40 in RPI coming to Joe Etzel Field in 2024, as well as an impressive road schedule.
The Pilots spend the first month of the season on the road, beginning with a trip to sunny Southern California. First, they'll take on the San Diego State Aztecs in a three-game series from Feb. 16-18. After that, they go to Los Angeles to take on the USC Trojans in another three-game series from Feb. 23-25. San Diego State went 24-29 overall and 18-11 in Mountain West play to qualify for the Mountain West Tournament. USC, meanwhile, went 34-23-1 last season and has an extensive baseball history, winning 12 national championships.
The Pilots leave California for Orem, Utah for a three-game series against the Utah Valley Wolverines from March 1-3. The Pilots have played the Wolverines – who went 34-24 overall and came up just short of winning the WAC Baseball Tournament – each of the last three years, splitting last year's series 2-2 in Portland.
Following that, Portland goes Midwest for a one-off game against the Omaha Mavericks on Wednesday, March 6. Omaha went 21-28 last year and last played the Pilots in 2020, winning both contests. They'll stay in Omaha for three more games, playing the Creighton Bluejays in three games from March 8-10. Creighton was 25-24 last season and played the Pilots in Portland in 2022, with the Bluff Boys taking all four games against the Bluejays.
Portland finally returns to the Pacific Northwest after that, but before coming to the Etz they have to play the Oregon Ducks down in Eugene. Those two teams play on Tuesday, March 12, with Oregon coming off a highly successful season that saw them go 41-22 overall and win the Pac-12 Tournament. They advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals as well, beating No. 3 Vanderbilt in the process.
After that, the Pilots make their home debut against the Maryland Terrapins on Friday, March 15 to start a three-game series that runs through Sunday, March 17. The Pilots have never played the Terrapins, who also put together a 40-win season at 42-21 and won the Big Ten Tournament last year. They've made the NCAA Tournament each of the last three seasons.
The Pilots host the Oregon State Beavers here at Joe Etzel Field for the first time in two years on Tuesday, March 19. It'll be the first of three games against the Beavers, a team that went 41-20 and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the third year in a row. The Beavers have won three national championships, winning in back-to-back years in 2006 and 2007 and again in 2018.
Following that, WCC play commences, beginning with a three-game road trip to take on the Santa Clara Broncos, a series that goes from March 22-24. Santa Clara was the only team to qualify for the NCAA Tournament from the West Coast Conference, having won the WCC Tournament for the first time ever and earned their first conference championship overall since 1997 as a program. The Broncos beat the Pilots in the WCC Championship to make the tournament.
After that, it's back to Portland for eight straight games, starting with a showdown against the Washington State Cougars on Tuesday, March 26. The Cougars earned their highest win total since 2015 last year with 29 wins and last played Portland in 2022. The Pilots will then host the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers. That series will be three games starting on Friday, March 29 and followed by a doubleheader on March 30. Mount St. Mary's went 25-27 last year and have never played the Pilots.
Portland hosts the Ducks for their final contest against the Pac-12 opponent on Tuesday, April 2 before resuming conference play against the Pacific Tigers with a three-game series from April 5-7. The Pilots have swept the Tigers each of the last three seasons, with their nine-game winning streak being the longest they've ever had against a WCC opponent. Following that, the Pilots will play their second contest against the Oregon State Beavers, this time down in Corvallis on Tuesday, April 9.
The San Diego Toreros visit the Pilots soon after for a three-game series at Joe Etzel Field from April 12-14. San Diego went 24-25-1 last season and qualified for the NCAA Tournament in the 2022 season after winning the WCC Tournament. The Pilots stay in the Pacific Northwest after that, heading up to Seattle for a road game against the Washington Huskies on April 16, who finished 35-20 and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2018.
After that, they travel to Spokane for a conference series against the Gonzaga Bulldogs from April 19-21. Portland beat the Zags last year in Portland for the first time since 2015. Gonzaga went 18-34 overall last season and 14-13 in WCC play. Following that, the final matchup of 2024 between Oregon State and Portland will take place on Tuesday, April 23 at Ron Tonkin Stadium in Hillsboro, home of the Hillsboro Hops.
The Pilots play their final games of April in Los Angeles, taking on the LMU Lions in three games from April 26-28. LMU finished first in the WCC with a 21-6 record in conference play and a 29-24 record overall. Portland hosts the San Francisco Dons at home to open up baseball in May, hosting the Bay Area team that went 18-29 overall and 8-19 in the WCC from May 2-4.
Portland finish off their road nonconference games for the year in Washington, taking on Washington State on Tuesday, May 7. The Pilots play their final road conference series from May 10-12, taking on the Pepperdine Waves down in Malibu. Pepperdine went 19-30 last year and 8-19 in WCC play. No team has won more WCC titles than Pepperdine at 18.
Portland finishes the season at Joe Etzel Field, hosting the Washington Huskies on Tuesday, May 14 before playing the Saint Mary's Gaels from May 16-18. Saint Mary's went 23-28 last season and 14-13 in WCC play. Portland dropped the regular season series against the Gaels but defeated Saint Mary's in the WCC Tournament to make the WCC Championship.
The Pilots are coming off a stellar year that saw them go 31-23 overall and 17-10 in WCC play, finishing second in the conference for the second year in a row. They advanced to the WCC Tournament Championship for the first time in program history.
