MALIBU, Calif. --The Portland Pilots lit up the Pepperdine Waves from outside and wreaked havoc defensively in a dominant 82-49 win down in Malibu.
The Pilots (12-8, 4-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Emme Shearer, who had 18 points and four made 3-pointers. Kennedy Dickie added 15 points, a career-high six assists and three steals and Lucy Cochrane helped out with 11 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.
Portland utilized fantastic ball movement in Thursday's game, piling up 24 assists on 33 made field goals. Dickie's six assists were the most for the Pilots and Kianna Hamilton also contributed with five assists of her own.
The Portland defense held Pepperdine shooters to only 36.8% from the field, including 11.1% from three-point range. They also forced 28 turnovers with 16 steals.
How It Happened
The Pilots jumped out to a 23-10 lead early thanks to stellar play on both sides of the ball. Portland added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 28-14 advantage.
Portland kept its first quarter lead intact before going on an 11-0 run starting at the 7:38 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Dyani Ananiev, to increase its lead to 43-18. The Pilots enjoyed a 46-23 advantage heading into halftime. Portland dominated in the paint, scoring 12 of its 18 points close to the basket.
Following intermission, The Pilots continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 58-33 before going on a 6-0 run to push the lead to 64-33 through three quarters. Portland took advantage of nine Pepperdine turnovers in the quarter, scoring 11 points off of takeaways.
Portland continued to grow its lead, leading 77-42 with 4:26 to go in the contest. The Waves narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Pilots still cruised the rest of the way for the 82-49 win.
Game Notes
» The Pilots lit it up the Waves three point range, knocking down 10-of-22 long range attempts. It's the fourth time this year they've hit at least 10 3-pointers in a game.
» Portland held the Waves to only 36.8% shooting from the field. It's the 10th time the Pilots have held their opponent under 40% shooting.
» The Pilots shared the ball well, recording an assist on 73 percent of made field goals for 24 total. It's the most they've had in a game since their 26 assists against ORegon.
» The Portland bench came alive by scoring 29 points to its scoring output.
» The Pilots turned 28 turnovers into 30 points on the offensive end. They also had 16 steals, the most they've had in a game against a Division I opponent this year.
» Emme Shearer led the Pilots with a game-high 18 points. Her four 3-pointers are a season-high.
» Kennedy Dickie had 15 points along with a career-high six assists.
» Portland got a team-high seven rebounds from Lucy Cochrane.
