SPOKANE, Wash. -- Portland Pilots Rowing competed at the Head of the Spokane on Saturday, racing in the collegiate pairs race as well as the collegiate four and collegiate eight races. The varsity eight saw the Pilots take as high as sixth, with 13 boats competing in Spokane against the host Gonzaga Bulldogs, Washington State Cougars and Oregon State Beavers.
"This was our first time at this race and we learned a lot!" Head coach Gulliver Scott said. "It was great to see some fast crews and I'm happy with our effort. We've been dealing with some health issues that, while routine, nonetheless have had an impact. I'm proud of our whole team for how they have responded. It speaks to the strength of our team leaders and the overall character of this group. We're already looking forward to the Head of the American next weekend."
The racing began with the women's collegiate eight race, with Portland having four boats race. The highest finisher was Portland's 1 boat featuring Leahbelle Paladino (Coxswain), Kate Feustel (Stroke), Aneta Sebokova, Phoebe Barkann, Mia Kilmister, Molly Spraker, Rachel Hester, Julia Kiplinger and Sarah Redmond. They finished the race in 17:13.0.
The collegiate four boats raced next, with two boats representing the Pilots. Portland's top-performing boat, A boat, with Leahbelle Paladino as coxswain and Madi Franco as stroke, completed the race in 20:52.0.
The collegiate pairs race followed, with the Pilots having three boats competed. The Pilots' top boat took 13
th in the competition, posting a time of 21:04.0. Redmond and Kiplinger were the pair that finished first for Portland.
The Pilots will race again on Saturday, Oct. 26 at the Head of the American, held at Gold River, Calif. Check PortlandPilots.com for more information.
