PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Pilots preserved their seven-game unbeaten streak thanks to a pair of goals from Joe Highfield, drawing the Saint Mary's Gaels 2-2 at Merlo Field. Portland moved to 4-4-7 overall and 1-0-4 in WCC action following the tie.
This is the first brace of the year for Highfield, who now has a team-high five goals on the season. Kash Oladapo also collected five saves on the evening.
How it Happened
Saint Mary's opened the scoring when Wade Muttitt scored in the 24th minute, assisted by Jack Vestberg. The Pilots levelled the match in the second half on a goal from Highfield -- a score that came on a penalty drawn by Muslim Umar -- in the 71st minute. The goal put the score at 1-1.
Portland then busted up the 1-1 tie on Highfield's 84th-minute goal, his fifth of the season. Connor Evans and Diego Rosas assisted the goal, with Rosas playing it to Evans who crossed the ball it into the box for Highfield to head in.
The Gaels fired back quickly to knot things up at 2-2 with an 84th-minute goal from Jude Zamora, assisted by Cesar Batres. The goal capped the scoring in the match, as the Pilots earned their seventh tie.
Game Notes
- Kash Oladapo collected four saves for the Pilots out of 15 total Gaels shots. His 41 saves on the year are the most he's posted in a single season.
- Joe Highfield secured a brace in tonight's match and now has five goals on the year. He is the second Pilot this year to record a brace in a match.
- Highfield's five goals in his freshman year are the most by a Pilot freshman since Benji Michel in 2016.
- Portland's seven ties are officially the most in program history.
- Portland's unbeaten streak extends to seven matches.
