INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – University of Portland Athletics posted a 94% Graduation Success Rate (GSR) per the latest data released by the NCAA, marking the 13
th consecutive year that the University has posted a GSR higher than 90%. The report pulls graduation rates from student-athletes in the 2014-17 cohorts.
"Our coaches, staff and student-athletes all put in extraordinary effort to ensure that our Pilots are ready for life after college, and our graduation success rate is a great indicator of that effort," Portland Vice President for Athletics Scott Leykam said. "Collegiate athletics is constantly in a state of flux, but the University of Portland works tirelessly to ensure our student-athletes can both compete at the highest level and receive a meaningful and enriching education. Thank you to the student-athletes, coaches and staff at UP that make this possible."
The Pilots have 12 teams represented on the latest GSR report. All teams posted a GSR of at least 82, with six teams posting a perfect GSR. Four teams that posted a perfect GSR last season did so again this year.
The Division I Board of Directors launched the GSR in 1998 in response to college and university presidents who wanted data that more accurately reflected the mobility of college students than the federal graduation rate. The federal rate counts any student who leaves a school as an academic failure, no matter whether he or she enrolls at another school. Also, the federal rate does not recognize students who enter school as transfer students.
The GSR formula removes from the rate student-athletes who leave school while academically eligible and includes student-athletes who transfer to a school after initially enrolling elsewhere. This calculation makes it a more complete and accurate look at student-athlete success. The federal graduation rate, however, remains the only measure to compare student-athletes with the general student body.
