SPOKANE, Wash. – The Portland men's tennis team concluded day one of the Gonzaga Invitational Friday at the Stevens Center. Cade Fernando advanced to the quarterfinals of his singles draw and teamed with Tannor Binder to reach the finals of the Doubles White Draw to highlight the day.
Fernando defeated Hubert Theriault 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals with a meeting against Sebastian Medica of Idaho scheduled for Saturday. He and Binder knocked off doubles teams from Montana and Montana State en route to the finals. They will take on Montana's Johnny Wilkinson and Duncan McCall in the finals.
Portland freshman Lucas Kimelman picked up a win in the top flight Blue Draw with a 6-7, 6-1, 6-1 comeback win against Gonzaga's Kai-Luca Ampaw. Kimelman and Tom Garcia also earned a doubles win in the Blue Draw by a 6-3 margin over a team from Montana State.
