SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The historic start continues for the Portland Pilots, with their big third quartering propelling them past the Santa Clara Broncos 81-54 down at the Leavey Center. The Pilots remain undefeated with all double digit wins.
The Pilots (14-0, 3-0) had three players score in double figures, led by Alexis Mark, who put together a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. She's the third Pilot to post a double-double this year, and her 13 rebounds are the most by a Pilot this season. Lainey Spear tacked on a season-high 14 points off the bench and Emme Shearer chipped in as well with 12 points.
How It Happened
After falling behind 7-2, Portland put together an 11-2 run to take a 13-9 lead halfway through the first quarter.. The Pilots played a back-and-forth opening quarter with the Broncos, but came away with a 17-15 lead.
Portland kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 10-0 run starting at the 6:07 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Dyani Ananiev, to increase its lead to 33-21. The Pilots were stout defensively, holding the Broncos to just eight points in the quarter to hold a 36-23 lead at the half.
Portland exploded in the third quarter, expanding their lead with a 15-0 run that made it 56-28 Pilots with just under four minutes to go in the third. Portland scored 31 points in the quarter to Santa Clara's nine, holding a 31-point lead with one quarter to play. The Pilots cruised to an 81-54 win the rest of the way.
