PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Pilots Men's Soccer announced on Wednesday their 2024 spring exhibition schedule, which features matchups against MLS, Canadian Premier League and NCAA opponents.
The spring season begins on Sunday, Feb. 25 with an away match against an MLS side, the Vancouver Whitecaps, who qualified for the MLS Playoffs with a 12-10-12 record to finish sixth in the West. Following that, they'll take on another professional side in Pacific FC of the Canadian Premier League, who finished fourth in the league with a 11-10-7. They'll host Pacific FC on Sunday, March 2 at 5 p.m.
The Pilots play Thompson Rivers University, a Canadian College based in British Columbia, on Friday, March 22 at 6 p.m. here at Merlo Field. Following that, the Pilots will host the annual UP Alumni Match on Saturday, April 6 at 6 p.m.
Next, the Pilots play a slate of strong NCAA opponents to finish off the spring, including two foes they played in the 2023 fall season. They start with the Seattle U Redhawks on Saturday, April 13 at Seattle, with kickoff set for 6 p.m. They will then host the Oregon State Beavers on Saturday, April 20 before finishing off the season against the Washington Huskies on Saturday, April 27, also here at Merlo Field. The Pilots played both the Beavers and the Huskies in the 2023 season.
The Pilots are coming off a historic year that saw them rank as high as third in the nation as they went 12-5 overall to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the third season in a row and the fifth time in seven fall seasons. They earned a first-round bye for the first time since 1988 after earning the 11-seed in the tournament. They set a program record with a home unbeaten streak that extended to 28 games (26-0-2) dating back to the 2021 season. The Pilots had three players taken in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft, the most in program history, with Kevin Bonilla, Jacob Babalai and Buba Fofanah all being selected.
