SEATTLE, Wash. – Portland played tough, but came up short in a 5-2 neutral site loss to a quality San Diego State squad Saturday afternoon at Nordstrom Tennis Center. The Pilots were without their top player, Iva Zelic, who was out due to injury, but the match was still competitive throughout.
The doubles point was indicative of the entire match. Portland inched ahead with a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles courtesy of Sally Pethybridge and Rimona Rouf, but the Aztecs earned a 7-5 win at No. 3 and then clinched in a tiebreaker at No. 2.
Rouf then evened the match score with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 5 against Andreea Velcea. SDSU went back up 3-1 with straight set wins at No. 1 and No. 6.
The final three singles matches each went three sets. The Aztecs clinched with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 win at No. 2 by Andjela Skrobonja. Myah Petchey held off Aleksandra Dimitrijevic 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4.
Portland freshman Nadine Arbaizar Martinez picked up the final point with a 5-7, 7-3, 7-6 (4) win against Gloria Alogo Piqueras at No. 4 singles.
The Pilots will next be in action hosting the Montana Grizzlies on Friday, March 1 at 10 a.m. at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center.
