SEATTLE, Wash. – Matt Strangio smashed the program record in the 3,000-meter while several women's runners posted all-time bests at Day 1 of the Husky Classic in Seattle.
Strangio ran the 3000m in 7:39.02, which beat the previous record for the 3000m set by Woody Kincaid in 2016 by almost 10 seconds. Strangio's time was also a record for the meet as well as a Dempsey Indoor record. However, Ky Robinson of Stanford and Aaron Las Heras of Northern Arizona just beat Strangio with times of 7:36.69 and 7:37.26. Strangio's time is still good for the seventh fastest in the nation this year.
Strangio wasn't the only men's runner to succeed on the day. Daniel Abdala's time in the 5,000-meter run of 13:49.30 was also a personal best and No. 7 on the all-time Portland list. Thomas Chaston, Jona Bodirsky and Evan Delacruz all set PRs in the 3000m, with times of 8:07.24, 8:19.57 and 8:34.22 respectively.
On the women's, Marlee Cavitt once again cemented herself in the history books with a time of 24.89 in the 200-meter dash, which is just four-hundredths of a second slower than the school record she already set earlier this year. Cavitt now owns the three fastest times ever run by a Pilot in the 200-meter.
Fleur Templier also shined in the 3,000-meter for the Pilots, with her time of 9:13.19 ranking fourth in program history and also being a PR. Samantha Prusse posted a personal record with a time of 9:34.36 and Maebh Richardson's time of 9:44.64 was a PR as well.
Day 2 of the Husky Classic begins at 9:00 a.m. up in Seattle. Check PortlandPilots.com for more information.
