PORTLAND, Ore. – The path is set! Portland Pilots Women's Basketball are a 13-seed in the 2024 NCAA Tournament and will take on the 4-seed Kansas State Wildcats down in Manhattan, Kansas for the first round of the tournament. The two teams will play on Friday, March 22 at 1:30 p.m. PST.
The Pilots qualified for the NCAA Tournament after defeating the No. 14 Gonzaga Bulldogs in the 2024 WCC Tournament Championship game this past Tuesday to win back-to-back WCC Tournament titles. It's the first time they've won two years in a row and the third time they've won in just the last five seasons. Portland went 21-12 on the year and won at least 20 games for the third straight year, marking the first time they've done that since the 1997 season.
This is the seventh time the Pilots have qualified for the NCAA Tournament, the second season in a row and the third time in the last five years. The Pilots played in their first NCAA Tournament game last year since 1997, taking on the Oklahoma Sooners down in Los Angeles. This year they'll play Kansas State, who went 25-7 overall and 13-5 in Big 12 play, finishing third in the conference. They lost in the semifinals of the Big 12 Tournament to Texas in their most recent contest.
The Pilots were picked as a 13-seed in the second regional group in Albany. They would play either the No. 5 seed Colorado Buffaloes or the No. 12 Drake Bulldogs in the second round should they win. Should the Pilots advance past the second round of the NCAA Tournament, they would head to Albany, New York for the Sweet 16 and Eilite 8. The Final Four will take place in Cleveland, Ohio from April 4-7.
The first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament will take place from Friday to Monday, March 22-25. Stay tuned to PortlandPilots.com for more information.
