LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Ben Patacsil racked up four hits, but the Portland Pilots fell to the San Diego Toreros 7-5 on Friday.
Carter Gaston (11-2) started and took the loss on the mound for Portland (36-18), the first loss he's taken since February. Tanner Douglas was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going two shutout innings without allowing a hit, walking three and striking out one.
In addition to his four hits, Patacsil had a double and an RBI to lead the Pilots. Brady Bean put together a standout day at the plate as well, going 1-for-4 with three RBI's. Spencer Scott also chipped in for Portland, putting together three hits in four trips to the plate.
How it Happened
Trailing 1-0, the Pilots first put runs on the board in the third inning. Bean drove in two runs for Portland with a single that scored Jack Thomson and Patacsil, making it 2-1 Portland.
The Pilots lost the lead they built in the third, but got back on the board in the fifth trailing 5-2. Thomson came across to score the lone run of the inning for Portland, which brought the score to 5-3 in favor of the Toreros.
San Diego expanded their lead to 7-3 before the Portland offense got going, reducing that lead to 7-4 in the seventh. Portland kept the Toreros off the board before narrowing the gap further in the eighth, scoring once on an RBI single off the bat of Patacsil, bringing the score to 7-5 in favor of San Diego. The Pilots were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
