PARIS – University of Portland Athletics will be well-represented at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, with seven former student-athletes representing their countries.
Portland Pilots Track and Cross Country has plenty of competitors on both the men's and women's side, with six runners competing over the few weeks. On the men's side, Woody Kincaid (United States), Michael Somers (Belgium) and Cathal Doyle (Ireland) will be the UP alums represented. Kincaid will run in the 10,000-meter, Somers will run in the marathon and Doyle will compete in the 1,500-meter. This is the first time Somers and Doyle are competing and the second time for Kincaid.
Three more former Pilots will be running on the women's side. Lorea Ibarzabal (Spain), Laura Hottenrott (Germany) and Anne Luijten (Netherlands) will all compete, with Ibarzabal qualifying in the 800-meter and Hottenrott and Luijten both competing in the marathon. It is the first time for all three runners.
Pilots Men's Basketball is also represented at the Summer Olympics, with Hugh Watanabe playing for the Japanese national team. This is the second year that Watanabe has been a part of the Japanese squad. Former Pilot Erik Spoelstra will also coach for the U.S. Men's National Team.
