SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Cally Togiai scored Portland's first goal of the 2024 women's soccer campaign as the Pilots battled for a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Cal Poly Thursday night in the season opener for both teams at Mustang Memorial Field.
How it Happened
Despite controlling the run of play early, the Pilots were down 1-0 at the half after Emily Nedom drilled a long-range shot from the left into the right side netting in the 34th minute.
Portland came out aggressively to start the second half and it paid off when Togiai started the buildup with a pass to the right wing. Hailey Bagby took two touches and sent a short cross to the center of the box where Togiai re-directed a header inside the right post. It was her seventh career goal.
Both teams had quality scoring chances throughout with Portland goalkeeper Bre Norris coming up big with six saves. Cal Poly's Mackenzie Samuel stopped two shots on the night.
UW transfer Hailey Still was dangerous up top for the Pilots. She attempted a 35-yard shot with Samuel off the line midway through the first half, but Samuel recovered to tip the effort just wide. Still then had a second half header miss just wide of the right post.
