LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The No. 8 Portland Pilots lost to the No. 10 UCLA Bruins 2-0 Friday on the road at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. The loss dropped Portland's record to 1-1-0 overall.
Tamir Ratovitz and Shakir Nixon scored the two goals for the Bruins.
How it Happened
Portland kept UCLA off the scoreboard in the first half and drew seven corners, but did not come away with a goal themselves. UCLA broke the tie when Ratovitz scored on a header in the 54th minute just seconds after the Pilots missed on a good chance from Buba Fofanah. Nixon's finisher came in the 76th. The Pilots made a push in the final 15 minutes, but came up short.
The Pilots recorded 12 shots in the loss, three of them on goal. Portland faced 12 UCLA shots, four of them on goal.

Quote From Head Coach Nick Carlin-Voigt
"Very even, quality college soccer game tonight. Thought we had a great match plan, and in first half we had a lot of control but failed to parlay that into a goal. We are disappointed not to the get the result as we felt we had a sure goal off a great attacking action in the second half and then we don't finish the play and they come down 45 seconds later and score a goal from a cross. Goals change games and it felt like whoever scored first would probably get the upper hand. You can't find a harder two teams that are so different in Washington and UCLA to start the season, so we will take the lessons from the games and keep improving. We will learn from this result and grow. Big week ahead with three home games in seven days."
