INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Portland's Max Mackinnon has been named an Oscar Robertson Men's Basketball National Player of the Week by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, the group announced on Tuesday.
Mackinnon is one of five national honorees, along with Mekhi Conner (Sacred Heart), Dawson Garcia (Minnesota), Bo Montgomery (UNCW) and Milos Uzan (Houston). The USBWA men's basketball awards are chosen from weekly conference honors.
Mackinnon tied the University of Portland single-game scoring record and put up the most points by any WCC player in a game this season when he erupted for 43 points in the Pilots' 92-82 win against San Diego on Thursday. He tied the previous school record set by Matt Houle in 1992. It was the fifth highest single-game scoring output all-time by an Australian player at the NCAA Division I level and is the most by a WCC player since Santa Clara's Jared Brownridge scored 44 vs. Arizona on Nov. 26, 2015. The Brisbane, Australia native also passed the 1,000-point mark for his career in the game.
Mackinnon was 9-for-17 from the field, including a career-best 7-of-9 from three-point range. He also knocked down 18-of-22 free throws and extended his streak of consecutive free throws made to 40 before it was broken in the second half. Mackinnon added seven rebounds, four assists and a steal in the historic game. Against Gonzaga on Saturday Mackinnon led the team with 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting. For the week Mackinnon averaged 30.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists while shooting 50 percent from the field, 60 percent from three-point range and 83 percent at the foul line.

The USBWA's national player of the week program has been affiliated with the Oscar Robertson Trophy since the 2009-10 season. Prior to last season, the USBWA had recognized just one player each week. Each Tuesday during the regular season, designated USBWA board members select five standouts from the 31 Division I conference players of the week to be recognized. The selections are chosen from a list of the conferences that named a player of the week on Monday.
