SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Henry Muench went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI's for the Portland Pilots in a 9-4 loss to the San Jose State Spartans on Wednesday.
Nolan Umlandt (0-3) started and took the loss on the mound for Portland (6-15). In the batter's box, the Pilots were led by Muench, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a home run and two RBI. Riley McCarthy furnished a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with a double and a walk. Tyler Howard also helped out for Portland, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate, his fifth straight game with multiple hits.
How it Happened
The Pilots struggled early, giving up nine runs throughout the first five innings. Portland plated two runs in the seventh to finally get on the board, doing so when Muench left the yard with McCarthy aboard.
The Pilots kept the deficit at 9-2 before closing the gap further in the eighth. Frankie Rutigliano came across to score the lone run of the inning for Portland, which brought the score to 9-3 in favor of the Spartans. Portland scored once more in the ninth, but the Spartans came out on top 9-4.

» Portland pitchers faced 40 San Jose State hitters in the game, allowing seven ground balls and eight fly balls while striking out nine.
» The Pilots drew six walks from San Jose State pitching.
