SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Portland dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 51 San Diego in the West Coast Conference women's tennis opener for both schools Friday at the Hogan Tennis Center. The Pilots fall to 5-6 overall, while the Toreros improve to 6-8.
San Diego secured the doubles point with a 6-1 win at No. 3 and 6-3 victory at No. 2. Portland's No. 1 tandem of Sally Pethybridge and Alaia Rubio Perez were on serve trailing 4-3 when the point was clinched.
Portland picked up a point at No. 6 singles by default to tie the score at 1-1. The Toreros earned straight set victories at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 2, respectively, to clinch the overall match.
Pethybridge pushed Claudia de las Heras to a third set and was tied 1-1 when the match was abandoned. Nadine Arbaizar Martinez was on serve in the second set after dropping the first as well.
The Pilots continue WCC action Saturday at LMU with an 11 a.m. start. The road trip concludes at No. 19 Pepperdine on Sunday at noon.
