MALIBU, Calif. – Portland had some bright moments but ultimately fell to No. 19 Pepperdine 6-1 Sunday in WCC women's tennis action at Ralphs-Strauss Tennis Center. Pilot freshman Isabella Marquart won a singles point, while the doubles tandem of Sally Pethybridge and Alaia Rubio Perez knocked off a ranked opponent. The Pilots drop to 5-8 overall, while the Waves improve to 7-8.

Portland had early momentum courtesy of the No. 1 doubles duo. Pethybridge and Rubio Perez cruised to a 6-2 victory over the No. 57-ranked tandem of Anastasiia Grechkina and Alexia Harmon. Pepperdine responded with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots to earn the doubles point.

Marquart highlighted the singles action with a dominating 6-1, 6-0 victory against Sebasianna Scilipoti at No. 4 singles.

Pethybridge also pushed No. 68 Grechkina to a third set super tiebreaker, but ultimately fell 6-3, 4-6, 10-7. Pepperdine won the other four singles matches in straight sets to complete the scoring.

The Pilots will continue WCC play at home Saturday against the Santa Clara Broncos with a 10 a.m. start.
