SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The Portland Pilots had two players take home WCC Player of the Week honors on Monday, with Curtis Hebert winning WCC Pitcher of the Week and Trey Swygart winning WCC Freshman of the Week.
It's the second week in a row the Pilots have taken home a player of the week honor and the fifth they've won in the last week as well. The Pilots swept the weekly honors last week, with Cody Nitowitz earning WCC Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week and Carter Gaston winning WCC Pitcher of the Week.
Hebert was electric on the mound for the Pilots on Friday, throwing eight innings with 11 strikeouts, no runs allowed and just one hit allowed. He became the fourth Pilot pitcher to throw at least 10 strikeouts in a game this season, with his 11 strikeouts tying for the second most by a WCC pitcher in a game this year. That total is also a career-high. Hebert has posted a 3.27 ERA and a 1-0 record, leading the Pilots in total strikeouts at 39.
Swygart hit .455 on the week, totaling five hits with a home run, an RBI, eight total bases and three walks. The highlight of the week was a 3-for-4 outing against the LMU Lions last Friday, including a walk-off home run in the 10
th inning. The win gave the Pilots the first game of the series and helped them secure a second-straight WCC series win.
The Pilots are off to a strong start in WCC play at 5-1, tied for first place in the conference through the first two weeks of WCC action. They are 11-17 overall, with their next contest being a home game against the No. 15 Oregon Ducks on Wednesday, April 2 at 5 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for tickets, live stats and video options.
