LAKE NATOMA, Calif. -- Spring rowing is upon us, with the Portland Pilots set to compete in their first races at the Sacramento State Invite down at Lake Natoma. The Pilots race tomorrow, March 8 starting at 8:30 a.m.

"I'm very excited for our race tomorrow!" Portland rower and All-WCC Preseason Team selection Kate Feustel said. "Our new practice schedule has allowed us to maximize our time on the water, getting out earlier than ever before. This adjustment has also made our spring break training camp more focused on fine-tuning our technique and racing strategies. This is the most prepared we have been since I have joined the team, and I'm confident about the season ahead!"

The Pilots will have five boats competing on the day, racing against the Sacramento State Hornets, the Saint Mary's Gaels, Orange Coast College and the Santa Clara Broncos. One varsity four boat will compete in the first race at 8:30 a.m., followed by the second varsity eight in the next race at 8:50 a.m. The first varsity eight will compete afterwards at 9:10 a.m., followed by a break.

After the break, Portland will have their novice eight and third varsity eight compete at 9:40 a.m. The Pilots will not have a boat compete in the novice four race.

"Feeling super pumped to get racing underway this weekend. We have had a solid stretch of training this past week in Sacramento and have maximized our water time during the first half of this semester," All-WCC Preseason Team selection Mia Kilmister said. "This race is a great start to our competitive season, going head-to-head against three conference rivals in Saint Mary's, Sacramento State and Santa Clara, who will give us some indication of our training and prep heading into more racing this season! Rowing at Lake Natoma has given us opportunity to train on our championship racecourse which we will race on for both WIRAS and WCC's later this season."
