DAVIS, Calif. -- Portland women's tennis dropped a hard-fought 5-2 decision to UC Davis Saturday at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. The Pilots fall to 5-5 overall, while the Aggies improve to 7-9.
Senior Sally Pethybridge and sophomore Nadine Arbaizar Martinez earned singles wins for the Pilots. Pethybridge defeated Mika Ikemori 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 and Arbaizar Martinez outlasted Daisy Maunupau 7-5, 6-7, 7-5 at No. 5.
UC Davis swept the doubles matches to grab the early lead and then won in straight sets at the No. 2 and No. 4 positions.
Portland battled to three sets at No. 3 and No. 6, but came up short. Aleksandra Dimitrijevic fell 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 to Maya Youssef at No. 3 and freshman Maria Galatescu dropped a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 decision to Isabella Bringas.
The Pilots return to action and open WCC play at San Diego on March 21.
