PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Pilots Rowing had 11 student-athletes recognized as scholar-athletes by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) on Tuesday: Natalie Baier, Phoebe Barkann, Veroncia Conklin, Kate Feustel, Tania Hernandez Abud, Julia Kiplinger, Molly Manfred, Sarah Redmond, Molly Spraker, Addison Thomas and Gaby Twitchell.
Each year, the CRCA recognizes rowers who excelled both in the classroom and on the water. To qualify, a student-athlete must have competed in at 75% of their team's spring races in an NCAA or IRA eligible boat and also must have competed at their respective conference championship. Academically, a student-athletes must be at least sophomore athletically and academically and must hold at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA or better through the end of the fall semester or winter quarter.
Portland Rowing earned wins at the Puget Sound Invite and Portland Invite this season and also had all four competing boats make the grand finals for the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships. At the WCC Championships, the second varsity four qualified for the grand final in a revamped conference championship while the second varsity eight took first at the petite final for their first win ever at the WCC Championships.
