PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Pilots lit up the scoreboard in a 9-0 victory over the Lewis & Clark Pioneers. Portland improved to 2-0-0 on the season following the win.
Eight different Pilots scored on the day, with Nicky Dunbar's two goals leading the way. Alex Waggoner, David Ajagbe, Jordan Barclay, Joe Highfield, Christian Mendoza, Parker Jackson and Oliver Jeppe also contributed in the win.
How it Happened
The Pilots scored almost immediately in the second minute of the match. Waggoner took the through ball from Highfield and knocked it into the back of the net for the easy score.
Highfield got involved in the second goal as well, working it back to Ethan Zamora before Zamora pushed it to David Ajagbe for the second goal of the game, coming in the eighth minute. Nicky Dunbar scored two minutes later to make it 3-0 Portland and close the scoring in the first half.
The Pilots made it a 4-0 lead with a 52nd-minute goal from Barclay, his first goal of the season and of his Pilot career. Barclay corralled the ball and put a shot on goal, recovering quickly and putting it back of the net to expand their lead by four goals.
Highfield got in on the action the very next minute, scoring in the 54th minute. Christian Mendoza scored the very next minute to give Portland three goals in four minutes, making it 6-0 Pilots.
The Pilots took a 7-0 advantage thanks to an 80th-minute goal from Parker Jackson, his first goal of the season. Ritvik Karra and Micaah Garnette assisted the goal. Dunbar scored his second goal of the game soon after to make it 8-0 Pilots.
The Pilots took a 9-0 advantage thanks to an 88th-minute goal from Oliver Jeppe, his first goal of the season. The 9-0 held to the finish.
Game Notes
- Portland's nine goals are the most they've scored in a single game since they scored a record-15 goals against Multnomah College in the 2020/21 season.
- Eight different Pilots scored on the day: Alex Waggoner, Nicky Dunbar, David Ajagbe, Jordan Barclay, Joe Highfield, Christian Mendoza, Parker Jackson and Oliver Jeppe
- These are the first goals of the year for Waggoner, Barclay, Mendoza, Jackson and Jeppe. It's the first goal of Barclay's, Mendoza's and Jackson's careers.
- Ajagbe and Highfield earned their second goals of the season while Dunbar now sits at three goals on the year.
- Massimo Oedekoven Pomponi and Ritvik Karra each made their Pilot debuts on the day.
- The win extends Portland's unbeaten streak to 12 games dating back to last year.
- Two Pilot legends helped restart the Lewis & Clark Men's Soccer varsity program: Jim Tursi and Bill Irwin. Tursi is the Director of Soccer for Lewis & Clark while Irwin is an assistant coach.
