KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Portland Pilots Men's Soccer continues to shoot up the rankings, now sitting at second in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll. It's their highest ranking in the poll since the 1992 season, when they ranked first nationally.
The Pilots earned the ranking after what has been a stellar start to the fall season. They sit at 6-0-1 on the year after a 3-2 win over the Denver Pioneers last Friday. It's their best record through seven games since the 1988 season. Portland currently holds an unbeaten streak of 17 games that stretches back to last year, the second longest in the nation and the longest for Portland since 1988. They are one of just 24 teams in the nation without a loss this year.
Statistically, Portland has been dominant to start the year, leading the WCC in 14 different categories, including points (66), goals (21), assists (24), goals-against average (.333), shutout percentage (.857), points per game (9.43), save percentage (.833), goals per game (3.00), assists per game (3.43) and goal differential (19). Nationally, they're in the top 10 nationally in nine of those 10 categories listed. Their goal differential is the best in a season since the 2020/21 spring season and the best in a fall season since 1988.
The Pilots open WCC play this week against the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. It's also homecoming week here on The Bluff, with a pregame barbeque and tailgate taking place around 5 p.m. at the Chiles Center Plaza.
